Over the Road and Far Away

Misadventures in Truckery

8/2/09 01:11 am

Does anyone know if it's possible to clean in the little gap between an LCD's front polarizer and the backlight? Because I just stupidly squished a spider I thought was crawling on my monitor, and it turns out it was IN my monitor. And now my beloved 22-inch widescreen has a mangled smear of spider entrails stuck to the inside.

6/15/09 11:19 am - The film from training class, "Fired"

Part 2

All in all, this was a fun experience, and I hope I can get some work doing more films based on this. It's far from perfect, but for three days work it's okay.

11/3/08 06:50 pm - A poem for election day.

Remember, remember,
this fourth of November,
'Fore your ballot falls down in the slot.

That charming Obama,
can save us from trauma,
if only he's given a shot.

G'night, America. Make me proud.

10/30/08 03:57 am - Cool pix from the Daily Mail

Geological wonder in Mexico, a geode the size of a building.

Neat.

10/16/08 01:04 pm - To :Joe the Plumber

Seriously, Joe, get over yourself. If you bought a business that makes $250,000 in profit, good for you. But don't complain when we ask you to help pick up the tab for the needs of the civilization that supports your life of extravagance. Even if taxes took half of your income - which they won't - you'd still have 125,000 take-home. Roughly three times the gross of the average journeyman plumber working for you.  If that 250k is supposed to be the gross revenues, then you're pretty dumb not to deduct your business expenses from it before you file.

Also, what is up with Republicans talking about class warfare. If there was real class warfare in this country, they'd lose. Apart from having 90% of the general public, we'd have every member of the police and military below a major's pay grade.  I mean seriously.  And yet people fall for it.

People, rich people don't need to be protected.  They can take care of themselves without our help.  We've had a long and glorious history of unfairly persecuting minorities: Irish, Polish, blacks, native Americans, Arabs, the handicapped, Chinese, all trod on for other's benefit.  It's rich people's turn.  And if they don't like it, unlike all these other groups, they can easily opt out, by giving away money until they only have enough left to never work again.  Seriously, the cutoff is too high, we should shun them at 200k, and start the beatings at a half mil.

6/29/08 10:07 pm - Cool Thing!

RepRap

Described as being like a little "China on your desktop, it's a rapid prototyping, stuff-making system with one distinct advantage: it can make 60% of its own parts, meaning it's getting closer to self-replication.  So now, I just need to find someone who has one.

6/23/08 09:11 pm - Alexander's No Good, Horrible, Awful, Very Bad Day.

So, I was driving home from work.  I'd had kind of a bad day, as seems to happen a lot these days.  I turned on the XM in my new Cobalt and started listening to one of the comedy stations.  They were playing an old George Carlin bit, and I started to feel better, because George Carlin is awesome.  Then after it was over, they played another one.  I thought, bonus! And I started to feel pretty good.  Then they played a third.  And a fourth.  And I got suspicious.  And as soon as I stopped the car I ran a google search on my phone.

And then I felt a whole lot worse.

This is going to be the worst birthday ever.

5/20/08 06:38 pm - So guess who got a real job.

It's me.  I'm the guy who got a real job.  I'll be selling copiers for a factory-direct lease dealer.  It'll be a huge step up from OMax.  I'm psyched.  I finish my last OfficeMax shift Saturday, then I'm coming to E. Lansing for fun times and celebrations off-the-cuff.  See whomever then.

I need to find people to go see movie with.  I'm off work until Wednesday.  Can we make this work?

5/1/08 02:41 pm - OK, OK, I'm posting, sheesh!

List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they're not any good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying now, shaping your spring. Post these instructions in your LJ along with your 7 songs. Then tag 7 other people to see what they're listening to.

1. Hallowed Be Thy Enemy - Mashup by Wax Audio, of Iron Maiden's "Hallowed be thy Name", and Public Enemy's "Public Enemy Number 1" It is very fun.

2. The Devil Went Down to Georgia - The Charlie Daniels Band. My jam for many years. Even though I'm not religious or country.

3. Fortunate Son - Creedence Clearwater Revival.

4. No Handlebars - Linkin Park.  It's a bit stupid and a lot pretentious, but I enjoy it, and it's on the radio every time I drive home form work after closing.

5. Nite Mamas - Limozeen.  The strongest offering in my collection of hair-metal parodies, and it always pops up in the 'ol playlist.

6. ....  I need some new music.

At my sister's birthday dinner tonight, I noticed that, apart from the uber-chin, my sister's boyfriend kinda resembles the Team Fortress 2 medic.

Also, Dresden Codak is updating again.  Go read.
